Position Summary

Directs, administers, and coordinates internal operational activities of APR in accordance with policies, goals, and objectives established by the President. Leads and directs the following functions and/or units: finances, membership, engineering, information systems, and human resources. Leads and assists in development and production of national level radio and digital content. Assists the President in the development of organization policies and goals. Shares responsibility with the President in the areas of major giving, board relations, and strategic planning and execution.

Major Responsibilities

In collaboration with the President /ED prepares the station’s annual budget and presents it to the APR Finance Committee and APR Board of Directors (BOD). Maintains the fiscal integrity of the station through excellent quality programming that meets community needs, increasing membership, profitable fundraising activities, sound budget management, and compliance with APR BOD policies and practices. 

Ensures maintenance of physical plant in conjunction with the Chief Engineer and Operations Manager. Ensures transmitter function and compliance with all necessary local, state and Federal laws and regulations. Oversees technical broadcast operations and program content, delivery, format, and schedule. 

Ensures program content complies with all necessary State and Federal laws, regulations, and requirements as well as the APR Bylaws and other APR programming policies and requirements.

Oversees the Program Manager and News Director to ensure continual improvement in all programming content, goals, initiatives and quality in conformity with the APR mission so that it attracts a growing and diverse listenership. Manages on air fund drives, benefits, and public events with the Development Associate and Membership Director. Oversees programming schedules on the station’s websites and in other appropriate venues. Serves as on air talent during Fund Drives and for other special programming, communicating the station’s mission and goals in a clear, concise and compelling way for the listening audience.

Ensures completion of and compliance with necessary public filed reports, annual CPB Station Activity Surveys, FCC license renewal applications, EEOC mandates, charity registration with state Attorney General, OSHA regulations, and all other necessary local, State and Federal filings. Maintains publication of appropriate station and network information, including those required by law (i.e., EEOC) or by policy.

Oversees all human resource activities including hiring, performance reviews, disciplinary actions, etc. Follows all APR procedures and State and Federal laws regarding employment processing, recruitment and selection, hiring, termination and other personnel actions and follows the APR employee handbook policy.

Ensures that a functional Community Advisory Board (CAB) is in existence at all times, per CPB guidelines.

Attends APR BOD meetings.


Ideal Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or non-profit administration required. An MBA or MPA would be desirable.
  • 5 years successful and increasing administrative, management, strategic planning, and business development experience. Senior management experience.
  • General management experience, preferably in the broadcasting, Internet, telecommunications or other media service industry.
  • Successful experience in fundraising in support of the mission and activities of public service media.
  • Demonstrated experience in production of compelling radio, digital, and/or other content with the highest journalistic integrity.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and independently managing multiple projects.
  • Track record of meeting financial goals and key business objectives.
  • Management experience must demonstrate an ability to recruit, develop and coach staff to function with high standards.

  • A vision for using media for effective communications, audience development, public service and revenue growth.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and vision for valuable public service through effective management of public media platforms, programs and services.
  • Understanding of public service and business opportunities for emerging distribution platforms.
  • Strong self-awareness, professional initiative, bearing and confidence.
  • Strong oral presentation and writing skills.
