Job summary

Edit scripts and audio for clarity, accuracy, creativity, context and strong broadcast writing, help reporters develop news judgement and deadline skills.

Shares in the oversight of newsroom personnel, and is responsible for developing stories, cultivating sources, and maintaining the stations journalistic credibility, both short and long range. Develop assignments based on deadlines, news value and ethical and professional standards inherent in public radio journalism. Will work with editors in news production and story editing across multiple media platforms.

Produces radio programs by delivering on-air content and technical continuity among all segments of programming. Assists in coordinating live interviews, audio elements and other program content. Assists in developing, planning and administering programming and operations, for local productions and news at a broadcast station or on a new media content delivery service.

Special Note: Position is located in Tempe, AZ.
 

Essential Functions

25% - Leads KJZZ efforts to broaden the station's editorial process to include reporting content across multiple platforms. This includes providing strategic and editorial oversight of feature stories, and series production, which includes cultivating sources, assigning reporters and script editing.

20% - Provides editorial direction to Original Productions team. This includes planning, monitoring and evaluating of the broadcast, but not limited to the partner content from networks and independent producers, and the production of program services produced in studio.

20% - Provides oversight and evaluation of KJZZ Original Productions team and implements changes under direction of the KJZZ Chief Content Officer.

15% - Edit scripts for clarity, accuracy, creativity, context and strong broadcast writing, helps reporters develop news judgement and deadline skills.

10% - Engage the News community in the region to place KJZZ content across other media outlets.

10% - Available for day of, Live and breaking news needs.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Broadcasting, Communication or a related field AND five (5) years of experience in journalism, news, multimedia.

2. Four (4) years of supervisory experience in a journalism endeavor.

3. Four (4) years of experience initiating, developing, editing and directing network quality long-form programming for broadcast.

4. Five (5) years of experience as a managing editor or in a senior editor position at a broadcast station, a newspaper, website, or magazine.

5. Excellent written skills as demonstrated through a cover letter, and resume, plus a portfolio containing recent examples of work in any media format from the last 5 years to be submitted with application. Portfolio of work should contain:
  • Use of appropriate equipment and software.
  • Producing well-written, contextual news with sound
    • Effective interviewing and story development.
    • Generating creative and innovative ideas and contributes to the development process in general.

1. Ability to:
  • Deliver consistently high-quality programming and unique content on deadline.
  • Establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the process of performing assigned duties.
  • Analyze and interpret policies and procedures to formulate, develop and present recommendation to resolve problems and questions.
  • Principles, methods, practices and ethics of broadcast journalism; equipment and terminology used in broadcast production operations.
  • Ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by the professional organizations, and/or Federal, State, Local laws, rules and regulations.
2. Three (3) years of experience working in a public media environment
Three (3) years of experience supervising the presentation of digital content. 

3. Early mornings, evenings and weekends. May require a Class D Driver’s License.
