FrontEnd Javascript Developer for News

New York Public Radio seeks a front-end javascript developer with proven HTML/CSS/Javascript skills, an interest in design and UI and a passion for news, data, public media, new technology and crowd-sourced journalism.

 

This position intersects with the news room and NYPR’s digital group.  You will work hand-in-hand with reporters, producers and editors for WNYC News, The Brian Lehrer Show, New Jersey Public Radio and other news/information services. Under the daily supervision of the Editor of Data News you will build news visualizations and interactives. Reporting to the Director of Digital Technology, you will be a member of an agile team of programmers working on longer-term projects related to audience engagement, mobile product development, innovation in audio, and other aspects of NYPR’s digital experience.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate in conceiving data news visualizations and applications.
  • Build the front end of those data news visualizations and applications.
  • Develop interfaces for the web and mobile apps.
  • Assist with ongoing development to improve WNYC's journalism technologies, including building data tools for journalists.
  • Work closely with NYPR's developers and digital teams to follow NYPR's best practices and ensure integration across systems.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation on applications, processes and workflow
  • Engage in local and open-source communities for javascript/HTML development.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends in technology, data news and media. This includes design, content, community, user interfaces and information architecture.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and three years professional experience in Web development
  • Ability to build interactive experiences with Javascript using libraries like D3, Backbone, jQuery and Handlebars
  • HTML5, CSS and JSON/AJAX fluency
  • Strong, clean and elegant visual design aesthetic with attention to typography, layout, and color
  • Demonstrated ability to turn designs and concepts of one’s own and others’ into beautiful, functional web and mobile experiences.
  • Experience with Mobile design and development including responsive design best practices
  • Ability to perform cross-browser testing and debugging
  • Experience working in a newsroom or public-facing media organization
    with an ability to work efficiently under fast-breaking, deadline conditions and juggle multiple priorities
  • Ability and eagerness to teach yourself new skills with minimal hand-holding
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed, including some evenings and weekends, and to be on-call for emergencies required
  • Confidence in working with a strong, passionate, fast-paced team environment.
