Social Wellness is more than just a month at NeoGenomics. While we are promoting the occasion with monthly contests, wellness tips, events, and more, employees can find social wellness activities at Neo throughout the year. Some of these social wellness events and platforms include intramural teams, NeoNetworking sessions, Employee NeoApp, potlucks, and more! A fan favorite every year is our Lab Week celebration highlighting Laboratory Professionals Week. This week is filled with games, lunches, treats, and more across all Neo locations!
Having healthy social wellness in your life can look different for everyone, but no matter what it looks like, these five tips will help:
Improve Communication Skills
A main aspect of social wellness is being able to cultivate and grow your relationships, which takes strong communication skills. Communication is essential for our well-being and should be a healthy balance between passive and aggressive. This happy medium allows you to interact pleasantly with others. Another key to having strong communication skills is learning how to mindfully listen. Mindful Listening is a way in which you listen without judgement, criticism, or interruption while providing appropriate feedback.
It might seem backward to focus on your self-care when working toward your social wellness, but it’s essential to start with you to improve your social wellness. How we feel about ourselves directly impacts the way we treat others. Spend time caring for yourself by eating well, exercising regularly, and engaging in hobbies outside of work.
Participate in Hobbies
Engaging in some of your favorite social hobbies can help decrease stress and increase happiness. At NeoGenomics, we provide outlets to increase social wellness such as participating in intramural teams or joining an employee resource group. Another way to get together with coworkers could be planning a department happy hour for after work.
Dedicate Time to People
Having healthy social wellness means forming solid relationships will individuals, which takes work. One way to ensure you are staying up-to-date on your relationships is to set dedicated time for everyone. For example, have a set date and time each week to call your friend, or plan a day every month to bring your friends together for dinner. These set plans help keep you on track with keeping your relationships healthy.
Engage in Volunteer Work
If you don’t have many hobbies that are social in nature, volunteering is a great way to meet people and get social. There are resources available online to find volunteer opportunities around you including Volunteer Match, United Way, and Just Serve. You can also check in with your local Humane Society because they usually have volunteer opportunities available.
